Fort Pulaski NM announces Trail Adventures

February 10, 2010

The new Trail Adventures guided walks at Fort Pulaski National Monument will start Wednesday morning, March 10th, at 10:00 AM and will be held on Wednesday’s each week selecting a different trail. Volunteer Linda Kennard along with park staff will conduct walks to observe the beautiful nature and coastal views of the park. The trails are marked and maps will be provided. This will be a great opportunity to explore the park and ecosystems and natural history of Fort Pulaski National Monument.

“There’s no better way to explore the natural beauty of Cockspur Island than to walk, hike or cycle along the paths and trails or kayak the water ways for an amazing outdoor adventure,” said Superintendent Randy Wester. “Enjoy over 5,000 acres of beautiful natural resources and wilderness.”

Anyone can take part in the Trail Adventures and all participants are asked to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. We also ask that you bring binoculars, insect repellent and water. After the guided tour, participants are encouraged to explore other park features including the visitor center, the fort and picnic area. Visitors can also pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it at the park's pavilion. Dogs on leash are welcome and visitors are encouraged to bring cameras.

If you enjoy a challenge, like to hike for wellness, enjoy nature, want to learn new things, or explore history, then Trail Adventures is for you! Don’t look for an aerobic workout. The pace on a natural history walk is very slow, with lots of stops to look at and to learn together.

Wednesday, April 7th has been designated Walking Day by the American Heart Association. Join us for our once a year Earth Day Walk on Wednesday, April 21st.  This provides a good lead in to the next day, Earth Day April 22, 2010. Come and enjoy nature with us!

Fort Pulaski National Monument is on U.S. Hwy 80, 15 miles east of Savannah.  An entrance fee of $3 per person is charged; ages 15 and under are free.
